The Need
"In 2007, over 450 applications for medical related work experience were made to NHS Lothian1"
- School students were often limited in exposure, either only observing one level of staff (e.g. junior doctor), or not rotating beyond one speciality
- Clinical staff would face spontaneous applications for work placements which were not the product of a structured or formal application process.
- Any application received through an attempted centralisation with NHS Human Resources were either linked to clinical staff, and where not, took time and effort to place with doctors
- Doctors would cite difficulty in matching their highly variable schedules over the course of a week to that similar period during which school students were normally on site
